Advancing Renewable Energy Utilization and Energy Efficiency Initiatives at the Tsukuba Plant

Komori Corporation (Sumida-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Satoshi Mochida) announces that it has installed and commenced operation of a large-scale solar power generation system and air-cooled heat pump chillers for air-conditioning at its Tsukuba Plant (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture).

 

This initiative is based on Komori’s long-term environmental vision, the “Komori Eco Vision,” and aims to reduce environmental impact through the use of renewable energy and energy-saving measures.


1. Background and Objectives

To address global warming and achieve a sustainable society, Komori is promoting the use of renewable energy and energy-

saving measures across its global group. Under this policy, the Tsukuba Plant has introduced power generation systems and air-

conditioning heat source equipment as part of its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.


2. Overview of Large-Scale Solar Power Generation System

At the Tsukuba Plant, a large-scale solar power generation system with a capacity of 1,800 kW was introduced under an on-site

PPA*1 model and has been in full operation since April 1, 2026. Combined with the existing system (500 kW) installed in 2016, the

use of renewable energy at the plant has been further expanded.

 

[Benefits of the Solar Power Generation System:]

  Power generation capacity: 1,800 kW (2,300 kW including the existing system)

  Estimated annual power generation: approximately 2 million kWh (approximately 2.6 million kWh including the existing system)

  Estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction: approximately 860 tons*2 (approximately 1,100 tons including the existing system)

 Renewable energy ratio in total plant electricity consumption: approximately 21% (including the existing system)

 

*1 On-site PPA:

A system in which a power generation company installs, owns, and operates solar power facilities on the premises of a host

company, which purchases the generated electricity over the long term.

3. Overview of Air-Cooled Heat Pump Air-Conditioning System

The air-conditioning heat source equipment at the Tsukuba Plant has been upgraded from conventional gas absorption chillers to

air-cooled heat pump modular chillers, with operation commencing in late January 2026.

 

This upgrade represents the second unit installed following the initial installation in 2018 and contributes to further reductions in gas consumption and CO2 emissions.

 

[Benefits of the Air-Conditioning Heat Source System:]

Annual gas consumption reduction: approximately 200,000 m³ (approximately 45% reduction compared to FY2024)

Estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction: approximately 310 tons*3

*3 CO2 emissions are calculated using the location-based emission factor for FY2025.



4. Long-Term Environmental Vision: “Komori Eco Vision”

The “Komori Eco Vision” is a long-term guideline aimed at realizing a sustainable society, with a focus on preventing globalwarming, responding to a circular economy, and conserving biodiversity.

 

Komori aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and has set targets to reduce total group CO2 emissions by 26% by FY2030 compared to FY2022 levels, as well as to reduce CO2 emissions from the operation of its main printing presses by 30%.



 5. Group-Wide Initiatives

Across the Komori Group, the use of renewable energy and energy-saving measures are being promoted not only at the Tsukuba Plant but also at production sites in Japan and overseas.

 

Overseas, Komori Machinery (Nantong) Co., Ltd., a production site in Nantong, China, introduced a solar power generation system with a capacity of 880 kW in 2025 and is expected to achieve an estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction of approximately 530 tons.

 

In addition, MBO Postpress Solutions GmbH, a group company engaged in the manufacture and sales of postpress equipment, has introduced solar power generation systems at its factories in Germany and Portugal, achieving an estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction of approximately 116 tons.

 

The initiatives at the Tsukuba Plant are positioned as part of these group-wide environmental efforts.

 

 

6. Future Initiatives

Komori will continue to promote the use of renewable energy and energy-saving measures at its production sites in Japan and overseas, contributing to reducing environmental impact and achieving a sustainable society.
